VIDEO Anomalisa trailer - one of the best reviewed films of the year

Charlie Kaufman is back with a film called Anomalisa, and this stop motion marvel is setting itself up to be the best of the year

Charlie Kaufman is the creative sort behind some of the most unique films of recent years. He penned Being John Malkovich and Adaptation and also the unforgettable cinematic classic which is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His first film as director was 2008s Synecdoche, New York and now he's back with his sophmore effort, Anamolisa.

We could tell you some things about it but there's simply nothing better than getting washed away by the first trailer, which was just released.

Unfolding in beautifully detailed stop motion which brings a sense of unreality to the otherwise mundane settings, the film is about an author called Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) who has trouble connecting to people, like many of Kaufman's protagonists. While on a business trip, he meets someone who might just be able to break him of this harmful habit.

The story comes from Kaufman's own play from 2005, which was presented only through dialogue, music and sound effects. The cast has been retained in the move to stop motion, with Thewlis joined by Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lisa (her name forms part of the title) and Tom Noonan playing every other character he meets, male and female.

And so far the reviews for the film have been utterly tremendous, with praise for the lifelike animation (the models were made by 3D printing), terrific performances and the strong themes and emotion of the script. It has only been at festival screenings so far, let's hope it has the same effect on mainstream audiences.

Anomalisa is coming to cinemas in the States on the 30th of December 2015 and arrives across the pond in March 2016.
