Star Wars The Force Awakens breaks records
Early ticket sales have only just started but many screenings have instantly sold out, especially midnight launches where people get to see the film before anyone else. As the first of the franchise to release in IMAX (and with some of the film shot on that format) those screenings will be in high demand and The Force Awakens chalked up amazing figures. $6.5 million of sales were made in just 24 hours, with the previous record only $1 million for a day.
Likewise, regular screenings are also selling out in droves. The Force Awakens sold more than eight times as many tickets in pre-release as The Hunger Games in 2012 - which was the previous record holder. That amounts of multiple millions of dollars, and all months before the film actually releases.
Naturally, this talk makes people think about those global box office records as well. This hype train, and the long period of time since the last Star Wars film, practically ensures a huge turnout over the opening weekend. So that record is pretty much a sure thing for The Force Awakens. But what about the massive target of $2.787 billion set by Avatar in 2009/2010? That's harder to predict.
For one thing, what if the film is terrible? Given the creative sorts involved it's not terribly likely but word of mouth is going to be very important as the weeks progress, and the opinions of fans can have a big effect on a feature like this. It's still a massive target to aim at, but maybe there's a chance of unseating Titanic in the number two position at a mere $2.186 billion?
Regardless, Disney is set to have a massive hit on their hands, especially when you factor in the cash to be made in toys and merchandise. And this is just the first step on a path with five other films already in the works. Let's hope we never get sick of Star Wars...
