Top TV shows of the last 25 years - Father Ted is one!
In celebration of a quarter century of being one of the most awesome things on the internet, IMDb has released its list of the best TV shows of the lat 25 years, based on the popular voting system on the site. There are a lot of obvious winners here for the years in question but you might just find a few TV gems that you missed, with some animated numbers getting really high billing.
- True Detective
- Rick and Morty
- Gravity Falls
- Game of Thrones
- Sherlock
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
- Breaking Bad
- Flight of the Conchords
- Death Note
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- House M.D.
- Arrested Development
- The Wire
- Six Feet Under
- Coupling
- The Sopranos
- Cowboy Bebop
- Oz
- Dragon Ball Z
- Father Ted
- Friends
- The X-Files
- Batman The Animated Series
- The Adventures of Tintin
- Twin Peaks
That is one weird list, and obviously the most important entry is Father Ted for 1995. Yes, really it's THE Father Ted!
There's a ranking system at work here which is pretty interesting, and it doesn't seem like the number of voters is taken into account. For example almost 900,000 people voted Game of Thrones in for the best show of 2011 but less than 13,000 voted for The Adventures of Tintin. There's a proliferation of animated shows which suggests a lot of voters giving something high numbers, maybe younger people with a fanatical interest in the show.
That said, HBO has some strong representation, which isn't at all surprising. It's nice to see OZ still have pride of place as other shows like The Wire took over in later years. And it's not all American-focussed, with entries for Father Ted (!) and British comedy Coupling as well as Flight of the Conchords and some anime. The higest rated shows are Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones - both on 9.5.
Which is your favourite?!
