Oculus Rift will cost at least $350

Oculus creator Palmer Luckey is avoiding being too specific about the Rift’s price, but said in an interview that it will cost at least $350.

Oculus Rift will cost at least $350

When asked by Road to VR if the Oculus Rift would hit within the ballpark of $350, Luckey responded, ā€œYou know, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you. We’re roughly in that ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that.ā€

Previous statements have put the Oculus Rift somewhere in the region of $300 to $400, but this may indicate that the headset is towards the higher end of that bracket.

Luckey then explained why the headset may cost so much, saying that it came down to the compromises that Oculus was willing or unwilling to make. He said that as it’s the first consumer headset the company is releasing, they want to make it the best possible experience that they were able to make.

ā€œIt would really suck if you put something out there and people were like ā€˜ah man… the Rift is good, but it’s not quite there,ā€ he added.

The Rift is also full of expensive hardware, much of it custom built. Luckey said, ā€œWe could have made tradeoffs that had… honestly like 90% of the tracking quality we had now, and we decided to do things that would bump that quality up a little bit more even though it raised the cost of the headset.ā€

Luckey still hasn’t revealed exactly how much the headset will cost, but it won’t come cheap.
