Star Wars sequel shooting in Ireland

We've just heard that a new Star Wars film is about to start shooting in Ireland. That's right, a new and different movie.

Star Wars sequel shooting in Ireland

Apparently the shooting which is set to happen around Skellig Michael - which has been getting a lot of media attention recently - will actually be the first frames shot for sequel Star Wars Episode VIII. This comes as quite a surprise as all of the information to date has suggested that reshoots for The Force Awakens were taking place.

The new movie, which won't be in cinemas until 2017, is being directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) and will continue directly on from the events of Episode VII. There are some spoilers going around the net about what those scenes might be but we're going to avoid them for now.

The shoot at Skellig Michael has raised some ire with conservationists because of the fragile nature of the ruins on the isolated island off the coast of Kerry and the rare seabirds which nest there. Disney and Lucasfilm have been working hard to comply with all the regulations and we're hoping this shoot goes smoothly.

Remember the exciting news - a new Star Wars film is being shot right here in Ireland!
