VIDEO Moving trailer for Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan
It's easy to forget that less than 100 years to go, woman didn't have the right to vote across most of the so-called civilised world. Half the population was held apart from the governing of their own lives and when groups rose to combat the issue they were often put down with brutal force.
A century on, and the role of women in modern society has certainly shifted but inequality remains - which is what makes a movie like Suffragette doubly important. It stars Carey Mulligan as a fictional character called Maud who gets caught up in the suffragette movement in Britain in the early 20th century, fighting for change against the male-dominated forces of the police and the government.
