Acclaimed Australian actress Cate Blanchett could be about to play entertainer Lucille Ball in a major biopic, scripted by none other than Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Steve Jobs).

That's already two massive names to bring to the table, and The Wrap reports that this would be a fully authorised story, with some input from Ball's family. The plot would chronicle her 20 year marriage to Desi Arnaz, who was also her long running co-star on the groundbreaking show I Love Lucy.

There's plenty of material there - not least in the behind the scenes difficulties in Ball's relationship with her husband and the important steps she took to become one of the most powerful women working in entertainment.

Sorkin has form with work based on reality, writing Charlie Wilson's War, The Social Network, Moneyball and Steve Jobs over the last few years. He hasn't yet penned a film with a major female character but with the aid of Ball's children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz jr you can be sure that he'll be honouring her legacy with the biopic.

There's no start date yet for this new film and Blanchett is yet to officially sign on. We'll have more news soon.
