Jack Reacher 2 coming in 2016

Remember Jack Reacher - that random Tom Cruise starring action film which dropped in late 2012 and was pretty much instantly forgotten?

Jack Reacher 2 coming in 2016

Here's a reminder.

It was actually a fun enough flick, letting Cruise work on a smaller scale with a character he's clearly passionate about who comes from Lee Child's series of novels. He may not look or act anything like the actual Reacher in the books but when you've got the pushing power of Cruise that doesn't seem to matter.

And that tenacity also means that the middling box office performance of the first film somehow isn't a stumbling block. Jack Reacher 2 is most definitely happening, with Paramount confirming an October 2016 release date.

This has been on the cards for awhle, with previous mentions of director Edward Zwick being picked to helm the followup. He's worked with Cruise before on 2003s The Last Samurai which makes it a good pairing, especially as Zwick hasn't had a hit in quite a while.

The second film will be based on Lee Child's Never Go Back which was published in 2013. So we're coming in when Reacher is well established, in the 18th novel to bear his name and as part of a narrative which also appears in a couple of other books featuring the character. The basic plot is about Reacher arriving for a hook up with the female commanding officer of a military base but getting arrested instead for a crime he didn't commit. This kind of stuff has happened to him quite a lot since he first debuted in 1997s Killing Floor.

Jack Reacher 2 is set for release in October 2016. Expect it to go into production soon.
