Irish born novelist Emma Donoghue knew she had the right person to adapt her book Room when director Lenny Abrahamson (What Richard Did, Frank) sent her a long letter about what the story meant to him.

And now she’s getting to see the fruit of all that labour.

Donoghue visited the set of Room during the filming in Toronto in winter 2014. And there she got to see the magic of her book brought to life on a soundstage.

It must be a very strange moment to see another person’s take on a story as idiosyncratic as Room - which is all told from the somewhat skewed perspective of a young boy.

And it had to have presented a massive challenge to Abrahamson and his crew to take the oblique angle and present it in a fashion which would be understandable to an audience.

They had good help in that regard thanks to Donoghue’s work on the screenplay, which was her first feature.

With a talented crew behind the camera and a cast including Brie Larson, Joan Allen and young Jacob Tremblay we have a feeling this is going to be a most memorable movie.

Room the novel is available now. The film will have its premiere at TIFF in September 2015 before going on general release in October.
