Nintendo may re-enter movie business

Nintendo could “potentially” re-enter the movie business in the near future. That’s according to Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind some of Nintendo’s major franchises, including Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda.

Speaking to Fortune, Miyamoto said that Nintendo has had many people approach it over the years to make a movie together or to get Nintendo to create a tie-in game for a movie. But he revealed that Nintendo is broadening its focus.

“As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that —and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future,” he said.

Nintendo has been open to working with the right people in the last few years. Bowser made an appearance in Wreck-it Ralph, while Donkey Kong featured in Pixels.

Last year, Nintendo created a trio of short animated films based on Pikmin. This could be an indication that it’s testing the market for a feature film.

And there have also been rumblings that Nintendo was in talks with Netflix about a live-action series based on The Legend of Zelda.

Whenever Nintendo and movies are mentioned in the same breath, the Super Mario Bros movie is the first thing to come to mind. Let’s hope Nintendo has learned some lessons from that venture.
