If you’re looking for an alternative take on Final Fantasy VII, there is a demo now available for the 2D beat-'em-up, Final Fantasy VII: Re-imagined.

In the demo, you can play as Cloud or Tifa, with Barret available as fire support on a timed recharge system, so you can call him in from time to time. You can play through the demo alone or in local co-op.

Singapore-based developer PD Design Studio noted that Final Fantasy VII: Re-imagined will likely remain a short one level demo. The developer won’t be able to charge for this project either as it doesn’t hold the license.

But the developer is OK with that. “This is a non-profit fan made project, done purely for fun," the developer said. "In no way does the fans who made the project is seeking to profit from the fan project."

Of course, there are still question marks over whether or not Square will shut the project down.

Those who want a more traditional Final Fantasy VII experience will have to wait until the release of the remake.
