VIDEO: New Sicario trailer is even more intense
Emily Blunt gets her most visceral role yet here and the early word out of Cannes is that its a blistering performance in one of the most memorable films of the year.
That’s not a huge surprise, following on from director Denis Villeneuve’s previous films - Incendies, Prisoners and the little-seen Enemy.
Blunt plays an idealistic FBI agent who ends up working for an undercover wing of the government on a cross-border operation into Mexico. There she meets Benicio del Toro’s Alejandro and quickly gets in over her head in the war on drugs.
The film also stars Josh Brolin and Jon Bernthal and is said to be seriously dark and strong material, maybe even set to earn Blunt an Oscar nomination.
Considering Villeneuve was pressured into changing her character into a male by studios, that’s quite a triumph for his casting.
