Disney's D23 convention won't have new Star Wars footage

There's a major Disney fan convention on this weekend called D23 but there won't be any more from the Star Wars universe

Disney's D23 convention won't have new Star Wars footage

D23 is on this weekend - it's a major convention for Disney fans which comes about every two years and presents a host of special events and first looks at upcoming attractions, toys and more. Started in 2009, it has also increasingly become a showcase for the company's massive movie slate, which manages to become bigger and bigger every year.

In 2013 that included early peeks at the likes of Muppets Most Wanted, Tomorrowland, Thor: The Dark World, Frozen and the very first outing for Lucasfilm after their acquisition by Disney. So with the The Force Awakens almost ready for its cinema bow in December 2015 surely we're getting even more from the galaxy far, far away?

Nope. The word is that there will be no new footage from The Force Awakens at D23, not even a behind the scenes look like the one which was presented at Comic-Con. And that word comes straight from director J.J. Abrams, who was talking to Entertainment Weekly:

"It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise. In the fall, there’ll be a trailer."

That doesn't mean it's going to be a totally Star Wars free event - the director confirms that he will be out for the expo and some of the cast will also be attending. You can be sure it will also be chock full of costumes and merchandise and we're likely to get a look at related properties like the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront from EA Games.

And it won't be long until the next full trailer arrives for The Force Awakens - we're actually surprised that so much of it has been kept under wraps up to now.

In the meantime, D23 will be showing off footage from The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, Captain America Civil War, Alice Through the Looking Glass and The Jungle Book. It runs from the 14th to the 16th of August 2015 at the Anaheim Convention Centre in California.

Star Wars The Force Awakens is in cinemas on the 18th of December 2015.
