VIDEO: Metal Gear Solid The Phantom Pain Gamescom trailer - The End of an Era

The Metal Gear series has always been a bit metal and over the top, but The Phantom Pain is taking things to new heights of nutty.

As you can see by the end of this bombastic Gamescom trailer.

So there seems to be a real screwed up demonic edge to this with some kind of floating spectre and a Snake who is covered with blood and might even have a horn sprouting out of his head.

Is that some natty shrapnel he’s wearing as a fashion statement? And seriously what is up with the scary ghost thing which looks like it would be more at home in something like FEAR?

It’s pretty clear that revenge is a big theme, as your character heads into the middle of the Soviet-Afghan war in the mid 80s to catch up with the folks who almost killed him a few years before.

And it looks like he’s not going to stop until they’re all dead, despite the very real threat of nuclear war.

Some of these events were set up during pre-release Ground Zeroes so that would be well worth playing while you wait for The Phantom Pain.

Apart from the many issues around the loss of Hideo Kojima from the project, fans of the series seem most upset about the fact that Kiefer Sutherland is voicing the main character, rather than long-time voice actor David Hayter.

None of this will really matter if the game is even half as epic as this trailer suggests, and we haven’t got long to wait before we find out.

Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain is coming to consoles and PC from September 2015.
