Vacation and Horrible Bosses writers set to pen new Spider-Man - promise he's funny

John Francis Daley and Jonathan M Goldstein will write the new Spider-Man film, and they're promising some laughs

In case you hadn't heard (and really how could you miss it) there's a new Spider-Man standalone movie on the way in 2017, with the recently cast Tom Holland first set to appear as the character in 2016's Captain America 3. After that casting was confirmed and director Jon Watts was named, we were still waiting to hear just who would be writing the script for the self-contained flick. And now that information has come to our brains through our eyes.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein are set to pen Spider-Man. They're best known for writing on the likes of Horrible Bosses and the Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and have their directorial debut Vacation in cinemas soon. They were also in the frame to direct Spidey at one stage, but they'll have to make do with typing stage directions.

The news comes from an interview with the pair for NPR. And there's no subtlety about it, as they've finally been given the go-ahead from Marvel to confrim it:

Daley: We can finally acknowledge that.

Goldstein: We've been saying no comment for the last week.

Daley: This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.

Goldstein: We're thrilled.

Daley: ... He's a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he's an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.

That last part is definitely interesting because its something we haven't seen a lot of in the movie adaptations so far. In the comics Spidey is noted for slinging as many jokes as webs at his enemy and while Andrew Garfield was a little more fun than Tobey Maguire, the humour has never really hit on the big screen. With two proven comedy writers and some fresh young talent, maybe that will finally change.

Spider-Man will be in Captain America Civil War in April 2016, with his own feature to follow in July 2017. Vacation is in cinemas in Ireland on the 24th of August 2015.
