Sonic the Hedgehog has been recreated in all his high speed glory using the amazing technology of Unreal Engine 4

Unreal Engine 4 is the latest software package from Epic Games which is being used to craft some of the best looking titles around including Gears of War 4, Fable Legends, Hellblade and Rime. Recently, the application was made freely available to all (for non-commerical use) and that means creative folks have been going wild with some seriously impressive technology.

The result is using the template worlds provided by Epic Games and populating them with familar gaming faces.We've previously seen Mario taking a photo-real jaunt and now its time for his old console rival Sonic to get some airtime. Check out what a massive cartoonish blue hedgehog looks like in a huge open world complete with attractive critters.

This is the work of YouTube fellow CryZenx who has managed to really distill a lot of the essence of Sonic into his character model, complete with a few trademark quips which quickly get repetitive. The sense of speed is really impressive as he tools around this huge map and we're assuming he keeps stopping because he'd otherwise run out of places to go!

If we ever get a new Sonic game will it look like this? Thanks to the increased processing power of the newest generation of consoles its a definite possibility, especially as clever developers learn to get more and more out of the set specs of the PS4 and Xbox One. Will we ever see another major Sonic game? Well that's a much better question.
