Inside Out breaks Avatar's box office record

Inside Out opened in US cinemas over the weekend and took in $91 million at the box office. Not only is this Pixar’s 2nd largest opening weekend behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million), but it’s the highest opening weekend ever for an original property.

Avatar, released in 2009, previously held that record with a tally of $77 million.

Initial estimates said that Inside Out would make a conservative $60 million. It’s likely that the film was underestimated because of how successful Jurassic World was the previous weekend.

The film has a staggered international release. It has been released in almost 30 markets so far, with an Irish release coming in July. Internationally, Inside Out made $41 million, making for a $132 million haul in its first few days.

Inside Out is being well received by audiences everywhere. It has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with just four rotten reviews recorded.

Inside Out will be released in Ireland on July 24th.
