Emily Blunt is a kick-ass agent in the first trailer for Sicario from the director of Prisoners

Denis Villeneuve has been making quite a name for himself in recent years, mostly for crafting mature and dense works like Prisoners and 2010s Incendies. This year he's back with what could be his best work to date.

Emily Blunt is a kick-ass agent in the first trailer for Sicario from the director of Prisoners

Sicario stars British actress Emily Blunt as Kate Macer, an FBI agent who is brought in to try to defuse the volatile drug war before it erupts even further. She ends up on the wrong side of the Mexican border on a mission she doesn't fully understand.

It's looking terrific. Here's the first trailer.

It's a shame that the thumbnail defaults to the only bit of flesh on display in the trailer - especially as studio bosses wanted the character changed to a guy - but the rest is pretty breathtaking. Villeneuve is working with incredible cinematographer Roger Deakins again and the visuals are going to manage to be both gritty and beautiful.

The rest of the cast includes Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Jon Bernthal, Victor Garber, Jeffrey Donovan - basically it doens't look like there will be many more female faces in the mix. But early reports out of Cannes say that Blunt is mesmerising in the leading role, and the film itself is incredibly dark and enthralling. We can't wait to see it.

Sicario comes to cinemas in September 2015.
