It's slightly scary to realise that it's almost nine years since Gears of War arrived on the Xbox 360 and pretty much created the third person cover shooter.

Almost a decade on, its hard to imagine the slew of blockbuster action titles without the influence of Epic Games' seminal series. So it's very good news to hear that the original game is getting a re-release to celebrate its place in gaming history.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition was outed earlier this year and finally confirmed by Microsoft at E3 2015. It's coming back in a totally remastered form which includes full 1080p resolution visuals and 60 frames per second multiplayer gamplay. Players will also be able to enjoy five totally new campaign levels which were never released on Xbox 360.

The game is set for release in August 2016 on Xbox One and PC and a multiplayer beta is already running. And you can get in on the action!

It's only running for a week, up to the 22nd of June, and invitations are sent on a first come - first served basis so get your names in quickly. A number of maps are going to offered up on rotation and Team Deathmatch and King of the Hill modes are on offer.
