The Witcher 3 has sold 4 million copies - the developers say Thank You!
In just two weeks, the huge open world RPG has sold in excess of four million copies. That's big by any genre standard but for an RPG title that's a sequel to a game which only released on PC and belatedly on Xbox 360, it's an absolutely huge achievement.
The ever gracious developers CD Project RED have taken to their Facebook with a message of gratitude:
This is the same which put a message of thanks in each and every game box, as well as a map and soundtrack and they're offering 16 free DLC packs, with two every week for two months after launch. They've also been outspoken in their response to issues with the game, releasing a number of patches already less than three weeks after release.
The success is completely deserved and gamers will be enjoying the fruits of CDPR's labour for many months to come, and that's before the expansion passes due in late 2015 and later in 2016.
The game released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC so it's hard to guess at what kind of earnings they've made to date but if we average out a unit price of around €55 (given that PC deals were often cheaper) we're still looking at around €220 million - not bad for an indie studio which controls all the publishing rights.
