Spike Lee will direct NBA 2K16's career mode

This could be the move that puts the “games as art” debate to rest. Spike Lee, who directed Inside Man, Do the Right Thing, and 25th Hour, is to take charge of NBA 2K16’s career mode.

Lee is writing, directing, and co-producing the mode. 2K Games says that this will elevate the game's story "from both a visual and narrative perspective."

This is “one of the most unique challenges I've had in filmmaking,” according to Lee. He said that this partnership will allow him “to push the boundaries of innovative storytelling.”

The story will “follow a kid through the trials and tribulations of being a top high school player and the decisions he has to make.” Lee, who is a fan of the New York Knicks, hopes that fans will feel even more connected to the world of basketball in NBA 2K16."

For many of us, this will be our only opportunity to star in a Spike Lee joint. It should make for an intriguing career mode, possibly unlike any that we’ve seen before.

Spike Lee explains why the story is so important in the released promotional video. We have to say, he makes some very valid points.

NBA 2k16 will be released on October 2nd on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
