Tom Hardy was surprised by Mel Gibson at the Mad Max Fury Road premiere - and it was awkward
Mad Max Fury Road is about to arrive in cinemas next week, after a glitzy showing at the Cannes film festival of course. In the film, Brit Tom Hardy takes over the lead role of the pretty whacky Max, made famous of course by Mel Gibson. And the two had an awkard meeting at the world premiere in LA last night. While Hardy and Gibson had spoken before, the Aussie actor staged a surprise visit to the red carpet - and Hardy didn't have a clue he was coming. Given just how iconic the character is and just how huge a star Gibson is, the experience threw the 37 year old actor. Speaking to the press afterwards he said he was wary of taking on the role because people have such a connection to Gibson's performance of Max but he felt safer in the knowledge that it was the same director - George Miller - who was creating a new take on the material. "I'm a different person to Mel, but at the end of the day it's George's further development of his imagination with this character, so there is no room for other interpretations, George is going to drive the way this is going and you just get on and that's it." It would have been amazing to see both Hardy and Gibson in the film together in some capacity but sadly that was not to be. Mad Max Fury Road tells the story of a drifter in a post-world wasteland who is just trying to survive when he gets caught up in a conflict between a warlord and a woman on a mission - played by Charlize Theron.
