JLo to thank for Google Image Search creation
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, in a guest post on Project Syndicate, revealed that Google Image Search was created because text search couldn’t deliver what users were looking for. He wrote that Jennifer Lopez’s green Versace dress she wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards was “the most popular search query we had ever seen.” But because Google didn’t have a “surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted,” Google Image Search was born.Schmidt wrote the blog post discussing how great inventors continue to tweak and tinker. He used Google as a reference point, noting that it was better than anything else at launch, yet they had to keep iterating. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, he wrote, kept iterating and started with images.Google has evolved to include a variety of different search tools in a bid to give users the information they need or want. He added, “We know that if we cease to be useful, our users will leave.”New inventions always shake up the norm and “that is why the future will always be as exciting as the past,” he concluded.
Jennifer Lopez and her dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards were the inspiration behind the creation of Google's popular Image Search tool.
