Spotify app launches exclusively on PlayStation
You may find yourself wondering when, or even if, Spotify will launch an Xbox app. That is still to be determined apparently. UK marketing director for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Murray Pannell, told Eurogamer that PlayStation have gaming exclusivity. He said that the duration of exclusivity is still to be decided, but said it’s “certainly for the foreseeable."This could mean the end for Sony’s own Music Unlimited service. Pannell said that the partnership means “we're in music, but is also the foundation of our music strategy going forward.” The Spotify app replaces Music Unlimited in the PlayStation menu. The PlayStation 4 app will play music in the background of any gameplay, under dialogue and sound effects. The PlayStation 3 version doesn’t have this functionality, but should make non-gaming time more entertaining. The Spotify app doesn’t require a PlayStation Plus subscription. And, just like on mobile and PC, it will work with Free and Premium Spotify accounts.
The Spotify app today launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, replacing Sony's own Music Unlimited app in the menu.
