Dumb and Dumber To Review

I’m going to have to admit something here – I was never that into Dumb and Dumber. Sure there are some great jokes there and there’s nothing to match the zaniness of Jim Carrey in his prime but I just didn’t get the same kick out of it as other people. That said, the notion of seeing these considerably older actors (Carrey’s now 52, Daniels’ 59) giving it a go again 20 years later certainly interested me, and I was intrigued by the possibility of waning directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly returning to one of their most adored characters for some more over the top laughs. And I have to admit, I found the result utterly confounding.Dumb and Dumber was always more about slapstick than sense but that’s reached new heights in number To. The plot is pretty much non-existent, serving as nothing more than a frame for the two leads to do increasingly silly, and sometimes downright disgusting, things in a variety of locations. Some of these throwaway moments land, more often than not thanks to the duo’s sketchy command of the visual language and the sight gags are frequent, and certainly far from subtle for fans of the format.Sometimes I entertained, other times I tittered and the rest alternated between being a little bored and aghast (seriously, some of the bodily function stuff is gross) but the thing I found most entertaining wasn’t happening on the screen but in the theatre around me. People were absolutely howling with laughter. Now a certain amount of this clearly came from the joy of seeing these actors playing these characters again, as references to the previous film earned everything from a chuckle to outright cackling. But the new material landed too, with most lines, every pratfall and scatological moment thrilling most of the packed crowd. For my part I thought it was a cheaply made and inconsistently funny film with leading characters who seem much more sinister in middle age. But it would seem, from the reaction of just about everyone else, that I’m wrong. So go forth, fans of gross out, and experience what might be your film of the year…In Short: Harry and Lloyd are back after 20 years - they're older but definitely not wiser as they get ready for a cross-country trip to find a long lost daughter
