What 2014 looked like on Twitter

As 2014 draws to a close, it’s always interesting to take a look back at the year and Twitter is a very handy way to help us remember all the events - big and small - that got everyone talking

Twitter have compiled all the top moments of the year and put them all on one website for you to peruse at your leisure.

Here are a selection of some of the best.

Year of the Selfie

Twitter has declared 2014 the Year of the Selfie and the evidence speaks for itself. Since January 1, the term 'selfie' has been mentioned more than 92 million times on Twitter - a 500% increase on 2013.

A selfie also became the most shared message everon Twitter - with Ellen DeGeneres' Oscar selfie being retweeted more than three million times.

Irish people love to talk about telly

- The October 26th episode of Love/Hate caused one of the biggest spikes in Irish Twitter traffic. A child was shot, Pauley was pushed off a roof by Siobhán and Patrick slit a man's throat. It seems we needed to vent after that one.

- And second most tweeted event was the All Ireland Football semi-final on August 24th between Kerry and Mayo which led to a replay. Cue celebrations and analysis from across the board on Twitter.

#OnlyOnTwitter Moment

More than 210,000 tweets were sent on March 15th during the Irish defeat of France to win the Six Nations in Paris.

But it was also special for another reason - the end of one of Ireland's greatest rugby careers as Brian O'Driscoll hung up his boots.

This tweet from the man himself marked the occasion and was retweeted 39,000 times.
