Irish ports handle 13.8m tonnes of goods in second quarter

Dublin Port, Ireland's busiest port, accounted for almost 60% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports in the three month period.

Some 13.8m tonnes of goods were handled by the eight main Irish ports in the three months between April and June, the Central Statistics Office has found.

New figures released this week show that the total tonnage of goods handled by Irish ports increased by 14% in the three months when compared to the same period in 2024.

However, the CSO noted that the most recent port statistics include figures for Greenore, Co Louth, bringing the number of main ports included in the statistics to eight.

Greenore was classified as a main port at the beginning of this year, meaning it handled more than one million tonnes of goods or 200,000 annual passengers for three consecutive years.

Due to its inclusion, the CSO said Wednesday’s figures are difficult to compare to last year’s data.

Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 4.4m in the three months between April and June, while goods received by Irish ports amounted to 9.4m in the same period.

Dublin Port, Ireland's busiest port, accounted for almost 60% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports in the three month period. Shannon Foynes was the second busiest port in the period, followed by Cork.

Great Britain & Northern Ireland accounted for 33% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports by region of trade in the three months, while EU countries accounted for 45% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports.
