Number of tourists coming to Ireland dips slightly in July

Approximately 646,400 foreign visitors completed a trip to Ireland in July, a decrease of 1% when compared with the same month in both 2024 and 2023.

Inbound tourism to Ireland saw yet another decline in July compared to the same period last year with visitors also staying for fewer nights and spending less, new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows.

According to the data, approximately 646,400 foreign visitors went on a trip to Ireland in July, a decrease of 1% when compared with the same month in both 2024 and 2023.

Every month so far this year has seen fewer tourists visit Ireland compared to the corresponding month in 2024. The largest decrease was seen in January where visitors declined 25% year-on-year, but it has since moderated.

In June there was a 2% decline in visitors year-on-year.

Tourism associations have disputed the figures being issued by the CSO with many saying they do not reflect what businesses are seeing on the ground.

The CSO said visitors stayed a total of just under 5.1 million nights in the country, a fall of 4% when compared with July 2024, and a decrease of 10% when compared with July 2023. The average length of stay for visitors during July was 7.9 days - down from an average of 8.1 in July 2024.

In total, the amount spent by foreign visitors during the month was €859.6m but when fare costs were excluded this dropped to €624m, which is a drop of 4% year-on-year.

Day-to-day expenses, which includes eating out, entrance fees, and public transport accounted for €312.9m of the total spend with accommodation accounting for €261.7m. Prepayments, such as car hire and pre-booked tickets, comprised just €35.1m of the total spend.

Overall, in July 2025 the typical foreign visitor spent €1,330. After fares are excluded, this falls to €965 compared to the €992 recorded in July last year.

Visitors from Britain accounted for 33% of all tourists arriving in July with continental Europe accounting for 31%. North America accounted for 30% while the rest of the world accounted for 6%.

The most frequent reason for visitors' trips was holiday or leisure, cited by 45%, while almost one in three trips, 31%, were to visit friends or relatives.

In terms of accommodation used by visitors during the month, just under 41% said they stayed in a hotel, while 34.6% said they stayed in their own property or with family and friends. Some 6.9% said they used a guest house/bed & breakfast as their main accommodation type, and 6.8% of the visitors used rented/self-catering.
