Primark opens flagship store in Manhattan's Herald Square
Primark Welcomes New York Shoppers to Flagship in Manhattan’s Herald Square
Irish clothing retailer Primark has opened a new landmark store at Herald Square in Manhattan.
Since opening its first US store at Downtown Crossing in Boston in 2015, Primark has grown to 40 locations across 13 states.
The launch of its latest flagship store in the fashion capital follows the retailer's expansions in Miami, Florida, Grapevine and Katy in Texas, Gurne in Illinois, and, most recently, Hurst, Texas.
The store also joins Primark’s New York locations as the eleventh in the state to meet the demand from New Yorkers.
"Our flagship at Herald Square is a defining moment for Primark’s US growth story," said Kevin Tulip, President of Primark US. “New York is a city where trends are born and where style is worn with unstoppable confidence.
Primark said the Herald Square store is "perfectly positioned" to capture high commuter and tourist footfall, housing more than 54,000 square feet of retail selling space.
Founded in Ireland in 1969, Primark now operates 480 stores across 19 countries in Europe, the US and the Middle East, employing more than 80,000 people.
The launch of its latest store follows a decision by its parent company, Associated British Foods, to separate its Penneys/Primark fashion chain from its food businesses through a demerger following a review of the group’s structure.
AB Foods said financial markets will better understand and value both its food businesses, which include brands such as Ovaltine, Ryvita and Twinings, and Primark if the fashion arm has a separate London listing, with its own board and investors.
While AB Foods says Primark now has the scale and growth opportunities to go it alone, it has faced growing competition from Chinese online giants Shein and Temu and in January warned on profit, highlighting weakness in continental Europe.
