Surge in cruise liners to Cork port for 2024 season

Marking the beginning of the cruise season, the MS Sirena, operated by Oceania Cruises, is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Cork on April 1, 2024.

The number of cruise liners accommodated in the Port of Cork this year will surge by 23% to 116 vessels.

The season, which runs from April to November, will see the majority of vessels accommodated at the port's dedicated cruise line berth in Cobh.

The MS Sirena, operated by Oceania Cruises, is scheduled to arrive in Cork Harbour on April 1, marking the opening of the season. The vessel has the capacity to carry over 850 passengers.

The biggest ship of the season is expected to be the MSC Virtuosa, which spans 331m and can carry almost 8,000 passengers and crew.

The 94 ships that docked in Cork last year brought 180,000 passengers to the region.

The Port of Cork estimates cruise tourism contributes €17m to the local economy, with onshore spending averaging at €81 per passenger and €29 per crewperson.

Port of Cork Company chief commercial officer Conor Mowlds said the cruise industry was continuing to thrive.

"The substantial increase in bookings for 2024 reflects the collective efforts and united approach to the development and support of cruise activities from the Port, City, County and local businesses — highlighting Cork as a premier cruise destination," he said.
