The US government has completed the process required to turn the former Jury’s hotel in Ballsbridge Co Dublin into its new embassy, following reports at the end of last year that it had purchased the site.
US representatives had shown interest in the site over a number of years and previously expressed interest in building an upgraded embassy.
The State Department expects to close on the purchase of the 4.2-acre site, formerly the location of the Ballsbridge Hotel Dublin 4, within the next 60 days.
US Ambassador to Ireland Claire D Cronin said representatives have “outgrown” the current building which is located just down the road from the new site.
Ms Cronin added that the investment in a new building will help “future generations” looking for opportunities in the US.
The seller will demolish the currently vacant hotel following the closing of the purchase. Once the acquisition is complete, the design, planning, and construction process will begin.
The US government and property developer Joe O'Reilly's Chartered Lands agreed to a deal, which is worth around $700m (€641m) overall, to build a new embassy on the site.
