Car giant Volkswagen is facing a massive investigation after admitting that it rigged nearly half a million vehicles to defeat US smog tests.

The world’s top-selling car maker lost a stunning 17.1% of its value and the Obama administration announced it was expanding its investigation of what it calls “defeat devices” in diesel vehicles to make sure other manufacturers are not using similar schemes to thwart clean air laws.
