Protests to be held outside BOI EGM

A protest is being held today outside an EGM of Bank of Ireland shareholders, who are to decide if they will lend money to the Government to cover the cost of last March's Anglo Irish Bank - now IBRC - promissory note payment.

The 'Anglo: Not Our Debt campaign' says the €3.1bn sum is an illegitimate debt, arising from the speculative activities of certain bankers.

The BOI EGM takes place this morning at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire.

Campaign spokesman Andy Storey said the Government has taken out a loan to pay the promissary note, and today are asking Bank of Ireland to take responsibility for that loan.

He said a lot of anger remains over this.

"They (BOI) might make somewhere in the region of €38m in interest from this," he said.

"Shareholders should ask themselves do they want to make money out of the repayment of unjust and odious debt.

"Quite a number of shareholders would (also) say there are a number of other things we could inveset in that would make us more money."
