French Prime Minister Francois Fillon is calling for the new EU fiscal treaty to be put to a referendum in his country, according to reports from Paris.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon is calling for the new EU fiscal treaty to be put to a referendum in his country, according to reports from Paris.

Mr Fillon said he considers it necessary to hold a public vote on the writing of a golden rule on budgetary discipline into the French constitution.

There is still no indication on whether a referendum will be held here in Ireland on the new fiscal compact, with the Taoiseach telling the Dáil this evening that the Government was still awaiting the advice of the Attorney General.
