British insurance Aviva ruled out a break-up of the business today as it told shareholders why it spurned a £5bn (€6bn) offer for its general insurance arm.

The group said its board had been unanimous in rejecting last month’s proposal from More Than owner RSA, which wanted to buy Aviva’s home and motor insurance operations in Ireland, the UK and Canada.
