IKEA hold preliminary talks with Mallow council
Mallow in Co Cork would be the perfect location for a new superstore for IKEA in Ireland, the Swedish furniture giants have been told.
Members of Mallow Town Council in conjunction with Mallow Chamber of Commerce have held preliminary talks with IKEA representatives about locating to the north Cork town.
Mayor of Mallow Cllr Willie O’Regan said there were further plans to invite IKEA representatives to the town to see what it had to offer.
“We have already had discussions in an informal capacity, but we are now putting a team together which we hope will showcase the best of Mallow to IKEA in the coming weeks.
“IKEA has been looking at various locations around the country, so we have to be ready to present ourselves in the best light when they visit.
“Mallow is the crossroads of Munster. We have an excellent labour force and have been designated as a hub town under the National Spatial Strategy, so we would be telling IKEA to look no further,” he added.
The company announced last week that due to the success of the Dublin store, which opened last year, they were looking to expand their operations in Ireland.
The store in Ballymun opened in July 2009 with an initial 480 staff. A new store would also be expected to create hundreds of jobs.
A spokesperson for IKEA said no decision had been made on a new location and that Mallow was just one of a number of towns under consideration.
