The euro hit a four-year low against the dollar today amid growing fears European governments will not be able to keep a government debt crisis from damaging the continent’s economy.

By early afternoon the euro was trading 0.3% lower on the day at 1.2320 dollars as finance ministers from the EU gathered in Brussels to try to restore confidence and ward off a full-fledged financial meltdown.
