State to take 18% share in AIB today

The state has taken control of almost one fifth of Allied Irish Banks after the institution issued shares in return for €3.5bn recapitalisation, it was revealed today.

The finance house gave the Government more than 198 million shares rather than a cash dividend of €280m as EU chiefs continue to assess the arrangement.
