Defiant Democrats insisted today that they would be able to push through the most sweeping new controls on financial institutions since the Great Depression, following a Senate setback.

The Senate, in a 57-41 vote last night, failed to get the 60 supporters needed for the regulatory overhaul. One Democrat, Senator Ben Nelson, joined with the Republicans.
