Cork Port considers five sites for harbour terminal

Five sites have emerged as possible locations for a new port terminal in Cork Harbour.

The Port of Cork is currently seeking the public’s input into their long-term plans to move their container facilities from Tivoli and their bulk cargo facilities from the city quays.

The company said today that they are looking at 12 sites in total but that five sites had emerged as preferred options. They are:

* Marino Point.

* The former ADM jetty at Ringaskiddy.

* Close to the Ringaskiddy ferry terminal.

* On reclaimed land off Ringaskiddy.

* Dog Nose bank near Aghada.

However, the Port’s chief executive, Brendan Keating, said today that no final decision had been made and urged all stakeholders to view their plans and offer their opinions.

The Port is currently holding an open week at their headquarters in the Custom House giving the public a chance to look at their plans and make observations.

The Port’s previous application to create a new container terminal at Oyster Bank in Ringaskiddy was refused by An Bord Pleanála.

The company hope to make a final decision on their preferred site by the end of April however a planning application is not expected to be lodged for the new terminal until 2012.

“So far this week we have engaged very positively with both local residents and communities and we are looking forward to a busy week. Our needs as a port have not changed and these need to be addressed,” Mr Keating said.
