The British Finance Minister Alistair Darling has announced a hiking in the UK VAT rate back up to 17.5% from January 1 in his pre-budget report.

It spells some good news for the Irish economy as a cut in the VAT rate there exacerbated the flood of Irish consumers heading North to snap up bargains.
