BoI: New business start-ups fall 18.4%

The latest Bank of Ireland Barometer has shown a 18.4% decrease in new business start-ups, when compared to the first quarter of 2008.

However, the survey showed that there is a 6.6% increase in new business start-ups, or 3,363 new company registrations, in the first quarter of this year as compared with the last quarter of 2008.

There was a 20% increase in dissolved company numbers year on year, with every county showing an increase, while a 16% decrease in examinership numbers belies the sharp year-on-year increase in liquidator-appointed and receivership number.

The finance and construction industry continue to take the biggest hits, according to the survey.
