Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said that private equity investment in the banking system is the Government's preferred option, because the state has limited resources.

An Irish-led consortium of private investment firms is reportedly prepared to invest €7-8bn in a merged group of Bank of Ireland and Irish Life and Permanent, with a significant stake in Anglo Irish Bank as part of the package.
