Stocks sank in thin trading today as worries about American International Group touched off broader concerns that continued tightness in the credit markets will usher in another round of trouble for financial companies.

Stocks sank in thin trading today as worries about American International Group touched off broader concerns that continued tightness in the credit markets will usher in another round of trouble for financial companies.

The major indexes lost about 2%. The Dow Jones industrial average fell by more then 240 points, erasing a gain of about 200 points seen on Friday. Bond prices also jumped as investors fled to the safety of government debt.
