Port of Cork reports record turnover
The Port of Cork has reported an increase in turnover for the year ending 2007 to a record €24.9m.
In 2007 traffic exceeded 10 million tonnes for the third year in a row and at 10.6 million tonnes achieved the highest annual throughput in the history of the Port of Cork.
Trade performances increased with oil traffic reaching 6.1 million tonnes, an increase of 3%. Container traffic grew by 8% to a new record 200,000 TEUs.
In 2007 the Port of Cork, under the new Strategic Infrastructure Act 2006, submitted a planning application to An Bord Pleanála for a proposed new container terminal at Oysterbank, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.
An Bord Pleanála refused planning permission for the proposal.
"Despite disappointment with the decision the Port of Cork is strongly committed to the development of a new container terminal to cater for the expected growth in container traffic," the Port said in a statement today.
