IBEC: Issuing of taxi licences must remain uncapped

IBEC today issued a statement in response to the Joint Oireactas Committee on Transport's hearing with taxi regulation and taxi representatives, stating that the issuing of licences for taxis must remain uncapped.

IBEC Transport Executive Paul Sweetman said: “Taxi services are a vital to the business community. To ensure demand continues to be met, the deregulated market must continue.

Capping the number of taxi licences will not achieve the appropriate balance between high demand and the supply of a quality service at a fair price. The taxi regulator’s focus on mandatory national vehicle standards and skills development programmes is the correct approach. This will address the Committee’s concerns on congestion and parking difficulties.”
