Takeover speculation surrounding drug maker Shire and strong gains from banks and miners helped the London market hold firm in positive territory today.

The FTSE 100 Index stood 20.4 points up at 5721.8 by mid-morning, with nerves seen in yesterday’s session calmed after a late rally for Wall Street.
