Standard Chartered today fuelled hopes that UK banks are weathering the credit crunch as it unveiled a better-than-expected 27% hike in full-year profits.

The bank – which focuses on Asia, Africa and the Middle East – reported record pre-tax profits of $4.04bn (26.8bn) for 2007 and said it was set for another strong year.
