A wave of selling from nervous investors dragged the FTSE 100 Index into the red today, 20 years on from 1987’s Black Monday stock market collapse.

The sell-off followed overnight falls in Asian markets, including Japan and Hong Kong, leaving London’s benchmark index 114.5 points lower at 6413.4 in the opening minutes of trading.
