Furniture and gadget discounts boost UK retail sales

Strong discounting on furniture and electrical goods helped official UK retail sales figures to jump by more than expected today.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said retail sales volumes rose 0.7% between June and July, against City forecasts that the wet weather during the month had left sales only 0.2% higher.
